WalkthroughChapter 1: Through the Rifts ofTimeThe first chapter features the beginning of Raziel's adventures through time. There are two major dungeons to explore, both of which result in Raziel gainingthe ability to use different elemental versions of his trusty Soul Reaver.Along the way, you get introduced to some of the main characters in the game, and also have the chance to see some of the history behind them. It may seema bit confusing at first, but everything will become clear in timePrologue: Escape from the Sarafan StrongholdAfter your conversation with Moebius, get to know the basic controls (lookat the instruction manual for some help with some of these). Try some jumps, power jumps and glides.
Also, turn ethereal and suck in some souls. Noticethe strange environs and then use the portal to get back to the normal world.Visit the room across from the 'crystal' door and look around using the freelookoption. Afterwards try out the other buttons until you find out how to attackin three different ways (running swipe, claw slashes, and a charging kick),how to crouch and crawl, and finally how to creep. When you are done, pressSquare and walk through the only regular looking door.In the hallway that follows get prepared to use your new found moves.
Ifyou want you can pick up a halberd off the eastern wall (use the Square buttonto grab it). Then creep up to the lone swordsman and start combat. Try outyour dodge moves, as well as your lunge attack. Your sweep attack is alsofun to use!
Once he starts kneeling, use the Triangle button to impale him- each weapon has its own finishing move - collect them all! Afterwards walkto the end of the hall and go through the door.In the next hall kill the guard and enter the eastern door. Kill the halberdierin the next room and continue through to the next one. Down the next hallyou'll enter an open courtyard. This is your first battle with the odds againstyou - just circle the enemies and switch your target when new ones get close.Keep them at bay and finish them off when the opportunity arises. After thethree guards lie dead, go through the northern archway and turn ethereal.Pass through the gate and then shift back using the portal.Once you reappear in the regular world, Raziel will have the Soul Reaverback in his possession.
The Soul Reaver can only be used when you have fulllife - for the time being. It is a really powerful weapon that can be usedin both melee and missile combat (hold freelook and hit an attack button).Try it out on the four halberdiers and four swordsmen that can be found inthe room - try to get good enough to take them without behind hit. Use theirweapons if you want to, but you don't have to.
Open the eastern door whenyou are ready to continue on with the game.Raziel will continue forward and enter the chapel that contains the bodyof King William the Just, the former wielder of the Soul Reaver. There you'lldiscover the former body of the weapon, and it fuses to you, letting youuse it even when not at full life. Now the Soul Reaver has a hunger thatequals Raziel's - you must kill with the weapon often, or it will start leechingyour life, until another source of energy is found. Luckily you don't alwayshave to equip it and can discard it whenever you want. Explore the room younow find yourself in and study the stained glass windows - aren't they pretty?Exit through the southern door.Kill the single swordsman and run down the hallway and go through the door.On the other side you'll find yourself in a museum of sorts - there are picturesand statues of the Sarafan - Raziel included. Once you are done looking atthem, a pair of halberdiers jump down from above and attack. You should beused to these by now.
After they lie dead on the ground, climb the southernsteps and then go through the eastern door to leave the castle.Part 1: The Dark ForgeOnce outside, jump into the water and swim (use X to swim) to the northernledge. Climb up (L2 + X when near the ledge) and witness the creation ofthe first beacon, a location to which you return, if you manage to die inthe spirit world. Right afterwards, turn the wheel and dive into the water.Swim through the now open sluice to the north and then jump onto the westernledge.
There you'll find the first obelisk, a place where you can save yourgame. Now that you have saved your game, use a power jump to get to the first ledgethen glide to the next one. There you'll have to slay some more halberdiersand a musketeer (watch their attacks and charge in right away). Further downthe path are more of the same that you already fought. Also, past the bridgeyou'll be introduced to a new enemy - the watchdog.
Use low attacks to killit, as well as ones that arc low such as the sword's vertical strike. Keepgoing until you find an outdoor shrine. This is where the portal from thespirit world can be found. Continue along the western path. Once at the topof the waterfall, kill the musketeer, as well as the watchdog, before headingnorth and up the stairs.
Make sure you activate the beacon. Continue downthe path and kill everything you find until you encounter a closed gate.Pull the western lever to open the gate (hold Square to open it). Go throughthe gate to find the pillars.Once there, Raziel has a long conversation with Kain, ending it with allowinghim to flee. Go to the north and enter spectral mode to turn the wall intoa flight of stairs.
Keep following the path until you come across a Sluagh,a monster that exists in the spirit realm. They are rather simple and canbe sucked just like any other spirits in this realm, but only when theirbodies have been weakened. Transfer to the real world as soon as you can.Walk along the path some more until you find a unique door. Use the SoulReaver (equip the Soul Reaver and open the door) to open the door - it actsas a key. As you walk down the hall, the door shuts behind you.
Run downthe hall and attack the shades as they come at you. Keep going until youcome to a larger room with a cutscene. This is the place where the basesof the pillars are housed. You'll meet the Elder God, a giant squid. Headto the northern obelisk and save your game there.Dive down into the water and take a look at the monstrosity.
Then head tothe east and go through the passage that is marked by a pair of yellow crystals.Get out of the water and kill the trio of shadows here. Climb up the hilland kill the shadows in your way. At the end of the path jump down into thelarge room. Take care of the shadows there then dive into the water. Go spectraland heal yourself before continuing.
Return to the material plane and headinto the northeastern tunnel - also marked by a pair of crystals. Followthe trail of crystals until you have to go up. Follow the vertical tunneland jump out of the water at the top.Activate the beacon and kill the pair of hunters. Follow the northeasternpath and bash down the door. At this point Raziel spots Vorador, the vampirethat was depicted in a stained glass window that we saw earlier. Go throughthe open doorway and follow the path to the obelisk. There are three huntersbefore the save spot, and a few after it.
Kill them all! Climb the wall atthe end of the path. Kill the musketeer and the two halberdiers on the otherside of the wall.
Keep going until you reach the terrace that you saw earlier.Activate the beacon and go through the door.As always, the door shuts behind you. Keep going and kill the thrall. Theyare tough and block, so you will have to use more cunning to defeat them.Once he is dead, pick up the emblem key (the shield) and place it on thedoor. You will have to drop any weapons that you are carrying to do so, butyou can always pick it back up later. The key opens the door. Go through, turn spectral and pass through the gate. Kill the sluagh and use the portalin the eastern room to get back to the material plane.
Head back to the gatethat you passed through and destroy the four thralls that you find there.Climb up either wall then head north. Kill the thrall and grab a staff.
Glideto the close platform, then to the far one. Jump down into the next room.Rotate the 'mirror' in the center of the room to open a door to the east.Walk down the hall and kill the trio of thralls. Go ethereal and pass throughthe gate. Kill the sluagh and head into the large chamber. The portal ison a raised dais.
When back in the material plane, kill the six thralls (twowarriors and four mages) that are on the ground. Climb up the northern walland power-glide (power jump, then glide) to the central platform. Go etherealto raise the platform then power glide to the eastern platform. Return tothe material plane.
Kill the thrall in the next room and use the emblem keyto open the door. Look at the Soul Reaver symbol on the roof in the nextroom and fire your Reaver-bolt at it to make it open.
Rotate the mirror tothe west and then move the southwestern column between it and the sun symbolon the wall. Now, jump on the small column tip and then power jump to thetop of the nearby column. You can now power glide to the hole in the wall.Pick up the sun disk in the next room and run to the larger room (you'vebeen there before). Now you can enter the room with the first mirror by justapproaching the door. Run to the north and place the disk on the pedestal. Now return to the first mirror and rotate it to the west. Go ethereal andpass through the gate.
Kill the sluagh and use the portal in the northernpart of the room. When in the material plane, kill the pair of thrall warriorsand thrall mages before climbing the southern wall. Rotate the mirror soit faces the north and fire a Reaver-bolt at the emblem on the ceiling. Nowpull the left column over a bit until it is between the two mirrors. Stepon the shadow and move the mirror so it faces the east. Push the dial tothe right. Jump down the hole and get the power of the Darkness Element. Now you can leave the ruins via the path that got you in there.
There isa bug that I found at this point in the game - don't open the entrance doorwith the Dark Reaver - it seems to 'deactivate' the door, making it impassable. In this situation, you can only reset and go through the level again.Once outside, you'll get to have an interesting conversation with Vorador, the vampire you saw on the terrace earlier. Afterwards, head back to theobelisk to save - this is a really important step, as you can imagine! Nowretrace your steps until you get back to the Elder God's chamber where aconversation will ensue. You can then save your game again.Part 2: The Light ForgeHead back to the stronghold - it isn't hard to find your way back there. You can save your game once there. Swim back under the wall and then overto the ledge to your left.
Use the pedestal to attune your Reaver to darknessand then swim over to the ledge across the water. Open the door there withyour Darkness Reaver. Enter the Light Forge.Run down the hall and slay the three thrall mages. Continue down the halluntil it brings you to a large open area.
Glide to the central platform andshove your Dark Reaver into the hole at your feet. If you need to, you canimbue your Reaver by jumping down. Once you use the Dark Reaver, a bridgeof shadows appears - the first of two special uses of the Dark Reaver. Runacross the bridge and then turn ethereal to get through the gate. Activatethe beacon and then return to the material plane. Kill the pair of thrallwarriors.
Place your palm on the northern door to open it.The next room is where you forge the Light Reaver, but it may be a good ideato activate the forge first. Turn ethereal and go through the northern gate.Keep going north until you hit a portal. Shift back, but don't approach thegolden star - doing so will get you killed by the sentry eye - instead justrun a bit to the south.
Keep heading in that direction and you'll have tokill four or five thrall mages and a pair of thrall warriors. In the nextlarge room, you'll find a mirror on a movable block. It is guarded by a pairof thrall warriors. Kill them and move the block to the north. Go throughthe now open door and run to the end of the hall. Kill the thralls that areat the end of it for the first mirror. Take the mirror to the stand in theroom with the movable mirror.
Once it is set, head in the direction it ispointing, kill the two thrall mages and rotate the mirror so that it facesthe northern door and opens it. Go through the door and kill the seven thrallsin the next hall.
Turn ethereal and go through the gate at the end of thehall.Just north of the gate is a set of pillars that you have to jump up onto. From there, jump to the north then east to get to the top of the platforms. Then power glide to the west and into the opening. Follow the path to theend and use portal when you get to it. Backtrack to the large room that hadthe Darkness Pedestal. Both in the hall and that open area you'll have tofight thralls.
Kill them all, imbue your Reaver and open the gate. Don'tgo through the gate, pull out the western block instead and climb onto itand then climb to the next floor. Go down the hall again and activate theshadow bridge.
Cross it and beware of the thrall mage at the other end -it'll try to knock you off - some creative gliding will save you though.Run to the end of the hall and get the mirror from the thralls. Jump downand place it on the stand. With your Dark Reaver intact you can now open the various doors within theforge - just try not to lose it by going ethereal - the prime reason whyyou already opened that gate back there. You can now open the eastern door. Then head north and then east to get back to the room with the movable mirror.Push it to the south and you'll activate the left light gem. Go to the eastand rotate the mirror once to the right. Proceed by using the Dark Reaveron the southern pillar and then the door that is further to the south. Thislights up the second gem and opens up the door that sits between them. Gothrough it and keep heading north.
There are a ton of thralls to kill - proceedwith caution. When they are dead and you are atop the steps, shoot a Dark-boltat the sentinel eye. When you approach the star, a pair of thralls will attack.Goad them into the next room and kill them there.
Shoot the eye again andquickly grab the star before returning to the room with the two gems. Placethe star on the statue to activate it and the forge. Forge your Light Reaver! Now head south until you get to a locked door.
Shoot the gem atop the doorwith a Light-bolt to open it. Continue down the path and through the nextdoor to leave the Light Forge.Epilogue: Back in TimeSwim to the northeast and turn the wheel again.
Now you can swim back tothe save spot. Now return to the waterfront and use a Light-bolt on the crystalabove the gates.
Swim into the stronghold and run down the southwestern corridor. The stronghold is still crawling with hunters, and I won't mention wherethey are - only where you have to go. Go through the door at the end of thehall and then into the large eastern door. Run across the cathedral and gothrough the gate at the far end to have your newest encounter with Kain.Get your Light Reaver back and then head through the southern door. Run downthe hall and go through the door.
In the circular room that follows, go throughthe western door. Go west again in the next room and then to the west again.Go through the southern door and then into the northern one at the otherend of the hallway. Make sure you have the Light Reaver - you'll need itto activate another crystal.
Do just that and you'll trigger a meeting withMoebius. Afterwards, he transports you back in time.
